ckAnthony James Clark, Ph.D.
Vice President, Product Development, Chromocell

Born in Glasgow, Scotland, Anthony was educated in the UK, and earned his honors, in “Microbiology with Genetics” in 1988 and Ph.D. in Plant Molecular Biology in 1992. Following a postdoc at the University of Rome and a research fellowship a Cambridge, (where was he awarded an M.A).

Anthony moved to the Carlsberg Institute in Denmark and worked mainly on the engineering of fungal and yeast metabolism towards improving beer aroma profiles. Anthony joined Firmenich SA in 2000 as a Laboratory Manager in the Biotechnology Department, at the Firmenich corporate headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. At Firmenich Anthony worked on: the metabolic engineering of aroma chemical pathways in yeast and plants, human body odor microbiology and natural product chemistry and bio-processing.

Four years later he became the Director of Biotechnology and in 2007 was transferred to Princeton, New Jersey, accepting the position of Vice President, Corporate R&D, North America. In this capacity Anthony: set up the Firmenich collaboration with Amyris to produce aroma compounds for the perfumery industry through biotechnology; set up sensory guided fractionation of a number of industrially important essential oils; and build a olfactory receptor biology organization aimed at decoding the human olfactory code.

Before Joining Chromocell, Anthony was at PepsiCo and responsible for the Long Term Research group focused on driving flavor and functional ingredients innovation for snack food and beverage products. As well his native English, Anthony also speaks French, Italian and Danish. Anthony’s favorite pastime is road biking but also loves golf and Glasgow Celtic (that’s a Scottish football team).
